• What genres do you specialise in? 

We specialise in romance and fantasy. These genres require strong arcs, character depth and immersive storytelling, and our editorial approach is designed to support those elements. We may consider other genres on request, depending on availability.

• Will you rewrite my manuscript?

No. Our role is to guide, not replace your voice. We provide feedback, suggestions and editorial insight so you can strengthen your work while keeping full creative control.

• Is my manuscript kept confidential?

Yes. All manuscripts are treated as strictly confidential. We do not share, distribute or discuss your work with anyone outside Lucid Editing. Please read the Client Agreement and Privacy Policy above for more clarification.

• Do you sign NDAs?

If you require a non-disclosure agreement, we're happy to review and sign one before beginning work.

• How do I know which service I need?

If you're unsure the free sample edit is the best place to start. We can review your sample and recommend the most appropriate service based on your manuscript's current stage.

• What's the difference between a manuscript critique and a developmental edit?

A manuscript critique provides a detailed editorial report with big-picture feedback, but no in-text edits.

A developmental edit includes both an editorial report and in-manuscript comments with specific guidance on how to strengthen the story.

• Can I request more than one service?

Yes. Many authors move through services in stages. For example, starting with a developmental edit and later returning for proofreading once revisions are complete.

• What should I send for my sample edit?

Send up to 2,000 words in Microsoft Word format. Choose a section that represents your writing style and the tone of your manuscript.

• Does the sample edit obligate me to book a full service?

No. The sample edit is completely obligation free. Its purpose is to help you decide whether our editing approach is right for you.

• How long does editing take?

Turnaround time depends on manuscript length and service type. A timeline estimate will be included in your quote before any work begins.

• Will I be able to ask questions during the edit?

Yes. We encourage open communication. You're welcome to ask for clarification about feedback or editorial comments at any stage.

• Do you offer rush services?

Rush services may be available depending on schedule. Additional fees may apply.

• How is pricing calculated?

Pricing is based on manuscript length, service type and complexity. A customised quote is provided after reviewing your sample.

• Do you require a deposit?

Yes. A deposit is required to secure your booking. The remaining balance is due upon completion unless otherwise agreed.

• Do you offer refunds?

Because editing is a time-based professional service, refunds are generally not available once work has begun. This is outlined in the Client Agreement. You may find the Client Agreement and Privacy Policy above the FAQs section.

• What happens after I receive my edited manuscript?

You'll receive your edited manuscript and editorial report (if applicable). You can review the feedback, implement revisions at your own pace, and reach out with questions. 

• Can I return for follow-up edits?

Yes. Many clients return after revising their manuscripts. We're happy to continue working with you as your project evolves.

• I'm worried my writing isn't good enough. Should I still submit it?

Yes of course. Many writers feel this way. Editing is not about judging your ability, it's about helping your work reach its full potential. You don't need to be perfect to deserve professional feedback.

• What if I disagree with your feedback?

That completely ok. You are always the final decision maker. Editorial suggestions are tools, not rules. You choose what aligns with your vision.

• Will editing change my voice?

No. Preserving your voice is central to our approach. We work with your style, not against it.

• I've never worked with an editor before. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Many of our clients are first-time authors. We explain feedback clearly and avoid unnecessary jargon.

• Does editing guarantee publication?

No editor can guarantee publication. What we can guarantee is a stronger, more professional manuscript that gives your work the best chance of success.

• Can you edit a manuscript that will be self-published?

Yes. Many of our clients are independent authors preparing for self-publication. Professional editing is one of the most important steps in that process.

• Do you format manuscripts for publishing platforms?

Proofreading focuses on textual polish. We do not currently provide full book formatting services.

• Should I edit before or after beta readers?

There's no single rule. Some authors prefer beta feedback first; others want professional structure guidance before sharing widely. We can advise based on your goals.

• Will editing make my manuscript sound generic?

No. Good editing strengthens clarity and flow without stripping personality. Your story should still feel like yours, just sharper.

• Why is professional editing expensive?

Editing is skilled, time-intensive work. A thorough edit requires careful reading, analysis, and written feedback tailored to your manuscript. You're investing in professional expertise and hours of focused attention on your story.

• Can I skip editing and rely on spellcheck?

Spellcheck catches surface errors. Editing addresses structure, pacing, clarity and reader experience - the elements that determine whether a story truly works.

• Do I really need professional editing if friends already read my book?

Friends and beta readers provide valuable impressions. Editors provide tailored, objective analysis. The two serve different purposes and often work best together.

• Why do you require a deposit?

A deposit secures your place in the schedule and allows us to dedicate time exclusively to your project. Editing slots are limited and booked in advance.

• Can I request a smaller edit to reduce cost?

Yes. We're happy to discuss scope options that fit your budget. The free sample edit helps determine what level of service is most appropriate.

• Is editing worth it for a first-time author?

Especially for first-time authors. Editing accelerates learning, improves craft and increases confidence in your work.

• What am I really paying for?

You're paying for professional insight, experience with storytelling structure, genre knowledge and detailed attention to your manuscript, not just error correction.
